The Rt Honourable Lord Boateng

Senior Advisor

The Rt Hon the Lord Boateng CVO is a civil liberties lawyer and was MP for Brent South from 1987 to 2005.

Lord Boateng served in Government as a Health Minister, Police Minister and in Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. He left front line politics in 2005 to become Britain’s High Commissioner to South Africa, returning to work on the continent in which he was brought up.

On his return to Britain, he became a member of the House of Lords. He has served on the Security Strategy, International Relations and Defence, and International Agreements Committees.

He is an independent non-executive member or chair of the boards of a range of commercial and philanthropic institutions. These span the banking, agricultural, education, water and sanitation, economic, youth development and cultural sectors. He is Chancellor of the University of Greenwich.

Lord Boateng regards himself as fortunate to have served as a young man as Shadow Economic Secretary under the late John Smith, whom he cites as an exemplar both in the practice of law and politics.
