Welcome to Lord Boateng

The Rt Hon. the Lord Boateng has recently joined the John Smith Trust as a special advisor.

As Labour MP for Brent South from 1987 to 2005, Lord Boateng served under John Smith as shadow economic secretary. Like John, his career took him from law into politics.

He went on to serve as Britain’s High Commissioner for South Africa. Since joining the House of Lords, he has brought his political and diplomatic expertise to parliamentary committees focusing on national security and international relations. He is currently a member of the International Agreements Committee.

Lord Boateng said: “John Smith was an outstanding leader whose moral compass, intellectual capacity, commitment to the effectiveness of inclusive democratic institutions, and passion for social justice live on in the work of the Trust that bears his name.”

Maija Paasiaro, John Smith Trust executive director, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Lord Boateng on board in his role as special advisor. With his outstanding experience and insights in the fields of politics, diplomacy and international relations, his contributions to our work will be invaluable.”
